Fort4Fitness 2016: Thank you!
6:45 AM., October 1st. Chilly, dark, and a bit rainy, but we were ready. Soon, thousands would be flying by on their way to the finish line. If you ask around, everyone has a different reason for participating in Fort4Fitness. One thing is for sure: they’re all great reasons, and it’s all for a great cause. For three years now, Community Harvest has been proud and honored to host a water station in this annual event. Employees and volunteers set up the water station on Calhoun, making friends with the neighbors, making friends with each other, and preparing our tables with seemingly endless cups of water and Gatorade.
There’s nothing like a great community event to bring people together, in more ways than one. In fact, we still like to talk about F4F 2014, when David Martin and Kimberly Yates danced to the music at our water station. They got married at Foster Park during a break in their half-marathon. It’s a great story. And you know what? Every single person who participates is incredible. People come from all over to be in F4F – to overcome physical challenges, to finish for a loved one, to finish for a cause, to finish with a team.
And we’re all on the team. In fact, The Journal Gazette recently produced a piece about Fort Wayne, Indiana, described by Reader’s Digest as “The City That Saved Itself” after a 100-year flood and closing of International Harvester in 1982. It’s an apt description of a city rich with community, caring, and strength in the face of obstacles.
As this year’s participants passed by our water station, so many said, “Thank you for volunteering.” Well, we’d like to say this: Thank YOU. Thank you for participating in an event that brings people together. Thank you for choosing us or any number of great charities as your partner for the race. Thank you for making a difference in our corner of the world.
