May 2017 Volunteer of the Month – Congrats Jim C!

Congratulations to Jim, our May Volunteer of the Month! Read in his own words about his experiences at Community Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your dedication, Jim!

How long have you been volunteering at Community Harvest Food Bank?

I have been volunteering for about 4-4.5 years now. Just one day a week usually, probably 5-6 hours/week is the limit that I get tired at.

What made you first start coming to help us out?

Well I was looking for something worthwhile to do and I just kind of figured what’s more worthwhile than food for people? People have to have food and I thought this was a good thing to do.

Had you been involved with Community Harvest prior to volunteering?

No. I don’t know where I got the idea to volunteer and then I started researching places where I could do it in Fort Wayne and I chose here. I like it here, the guys are nice downstairs – Greg and Hicham – and everybody’s nice, so it’s fun.

Can you tell me where you typically volunteer?

I come in and I go in the cooler and the freezer because nobody else really likes to do that so I figure I would do that. I take possession of that when I’m here, I don’t let anybody else in.

What’s your favorite part of coming in to volunteer?

Well it’s helping other people but it’s also good for me because I don’t really think about my other job. It’s nice and relaxing kind of for me, so I like that too.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

I am married to my wife, Sue, and we have four beautiful grandchildren which are the light of our life. My daughter’s pregnant; it will be her first one so soon it will be five. We live out by Carroll High School. I have two children and my wife has two children so we have a combined family. And I like sports. I used to like playing sports but I’m getting a little old for that so now I like watching. Butt really the most fun I have is with my grandchildren, I got to be truthful, and it’s fun.

Are they all here in town?

Yeah, two of them live right across the street from me and they are nine and seven and then the other two, they’re eight and four, just live about 2 miles away, so they’re close. So when I have a bad day at work I go across the street and they jump on me and then it’s not so bad then.
