25% of Hoosier older adults live at risk of hunger

Each month, many older adults in northeast Indiana must decide between purchasing food, filling prescriptions, or paying utilities or rent.  Their limited income or retirement savings do not cover all their necessary living expenses. In fact, 25% of Hoosier senior adults live at risk of hunger and 34% are at high risk of suffering from malnutrition.

SeniorPak eases the decision for 862 area senior citizens because they know they can count on SeniorPak and its 20-22 pound bag of groceries every two weeks so they do not have to choose between missing meals or missing medicine.  A donation of $125.00 provides a single SeniorPak recipient between 500-600 pounds of healthy food annually or stated another way a 20-22 lb bag of groceries every other week for a year. Your small donation will have a large impact on the life of at least one senior citizen.

The SeniorPak program receives funding in part from the following:

Parkview Health Community Improvement Program      Home Instead Senior Care Foundation
Howard P. Arnold Foundation                                              Alliance With Indiana (Hoosier Lottery)
  CVS Foundation

Volunteers are a key ingredient!

SeniorPak ensures that homebound older adults living on limited income maintain essential nutritional needs.  Proper nutrition is essential to good health in later years, and inadequate nutrition quickly leads to declining health. Our volunteers are a key ingredient of the program's success.  Some sort and stock food, some bag the groceries, some deliver them to the seniors and some do all three.  Families, retirees, church groups and students all deliver to SeniorPak recipients, and have more than one stop on their route. You can't imagine the feeling you'll experience after having delivered to seniors!

The cost is a couple gallons of gasoline. The payoff is the expression on the face of the senior citizen you just delivered food to and the way you feel as you drive home.
