Community Harvest Food Bank Receives $20,000 in Support of Senior Hunger Relief from Kraft Heinz Co. Foundation

Community Harvest is a recipient of a $20,000 grant from Feeding America, thanks to the Kraft Heinz Co. Foundation. Thanks to this funding, the SeniorPak and Senior Farm Wagon programs will distribute more than 100,000 pounds of food during the upcoming year. This includes fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein, bread, and many shelf stable foods as well.

“We are truly grateful for this support of senior hunger relief,” said Carmen Cumberland, Community Harvest Executive President. “With nearly one in four seniors in Indiana identifying as food insecure, this funding goes a long way toward bridging the meal gap in older adults.”

Last year, the combined programs distributed more than 600,000 pounds of food to seniors throughout northeast Indiana. Currently, the programs have a waiting list for enrollment.

“We continue to clear our waiting lists, but the need remains,” said Cumberland. “One day, we hope that senior hunger is eliminated for good, but for now, grants like this go a long way toward meeting the need here in our region. It’s tough when you have to make choices like whether to buy food or medicine. This program provides supplemental groceries so that fewer older adults need to make those hard choices.”
