The Marilyn and Joel Salon Endowment

When you contribute to our endowment fund, you’re creating a long-term legacy that helps end hunger for generations.

Community Harvest Food Bank is proud to announce the creation of the Marilyn and Joel Salon Endowment. Marilyn Salon was a close friend of the food bank, and a strong advocate for hunger relief causes. We were filled with sadness at her passing this past December, and her wit and vibrant spirit will be sorely missed.

Marilyn and Joel’s important contributions to causes that positively impact lives everywhere should be remembered for years to come, even in their absence. This is why Community Harvest is starting the Marilyn and Joel Salon Endowment, which will provide sustainable benefit to food insecure families in perpetuity. All donations made in Marilyn Salon’s name will be allocated to the endowment. It is our goal that within 5 years, the endowment will grow to $5,000,000, the income from which will provide hunger relief program funds, technology updates, and capital equipment, such as food delivery trucks.

Marilyn and Joel’s children, Scott, Joel, and Jeffrey, have been instrumental in the creation of the endowment.

Statement from the Salon family:

“Food insecurity affects not only the quality of life, but it also threatens survival. Mitigating food insecurity is foundational in caring for our fellow humans. Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana fulfills this mission efficiently and effectively with compassion and caring. It receives the highest rating achievable for a charitable organization from both Charity Navigator and Guide Star.

Marilyn and Joel Salon lived during the great depression, where they learned the devastating effects of hunger. Guided by a deeply held commitment to help others and thankful for the quality of life they were fortunate to enjoy, they had been longstanding and generous benefactors to this organization. When it was clear during the pandemic that community needs would greatly surpass those of typical years, the family welcomed the opportunity to honor their memory and establish an endowment for the Food Bank so that it would be able to respond to inevitable but unpredictable food needs of the community. A continuing commitment to caring for others in the community in which they lived most of their lives.”

What is an endowment?

An endowment is a gift of cash, assets, or other property donated in perpetuity, and embodies the idea that a community can take its destiny in its own hands and plan for a better future. A gift to the Marilyn and Joel Salon Endowment never diminishes, but is invested to produce income that helps advance the mission of hunger relief in northeast Indiana. The fund will continue to benefit families across the region for generations to come.
